What is National Grid (GB)?
Great Britain's electricity system · serves England, Scotland & Wales
Great Britain runs its own synchronised grid, separate from continental Europe and linked to it (and to Ireland) by undersea HVDC interconnectors. It has decarbonised faster than almost any large economy: coal, which supplied most of Britain's power within living memory, has been pushed to zero, replaced by offshore wind, gas, and nuclear.
Balancing a grid where wind can swing from a few percent to more than half of supply within a day is the defining task of the GB system operator.

Frequently asked questions
What is the GB power grid?
Great Britain's electricity grid is a self-contained synchronised system linked to Europe and Ireland by undersea cables. It has shifted from coal-dominated to wind-led in barely a decade.
