What is Eastern Interconnection?

The Eastern Interconnection · serves Eastern two-thirds of North America

The Eastern Interconnection is one of the giant synchronised AC machines that North America's grid is built from. Every generator from the Rockies to the Atlantic, across PJM, MISO, SPP, the Southeast and more, spins in lockstep at the same frequency. A disturbance anywhere ripples everywhere.

It connects to the Western Interconnection and ERCOT only through a handful of DC ties, which act as buffers between the otherwise-separate machines.
